For the first time since 1962, the French government has been toppled by a motion of no confidence. Emmanuel Macron is now forced to quickly appoint a new prime minister who will have to deal with an institutional system in crisis, characterised by a president determined to stay in office until 2027, a deeply divided National Assembly that cannot be dissolved before summer 2025 and a budget still in limbo.
